Overview
Your U: Drive is a personal network drive that you have access to on all DU computers. To save a backup of your desktop, documents, downloads, pictures, and browser bookmarks, please follow these steps:
Instructions
- Open the File Explorer either by clicking the folder icon shown below, or by pressing the Windows Key + E
- Open your U: Drive by finding it using one of the two methods shown below
- With your U: Drive open in one window of File Explorer, open another new window of File Explorer. This can be done by hitting the Windows Key + E, or right clicking 'This PC' and selecting 'Open in a new window.' We recommend arranging this window side by side, as shown below.
- Now that you have both windows open, you can simply drag and drop files and folders onto your U: Drive. You may want to create folders to organize the files either with the 'New folder' button at the top of File Explorer, or by right clicking an empty space and selecting New > Folder. You can use keyboard shortcuts to select many items at a time such as Ctrl + A to select all items in a folder, or by clicking an item at the top of a list, and clicking the last item while holding Shift to select all items between the two. Here is a video showing this process: U: Drive Backup.mp4. (Note: the file transfer was canceled in the video for the sake of time, please allow the progress bar to complete otherwise your files won't be completely saved)
Web Browser Bookmark Backup
Each browser has a slightly different process to backup/export your bookmarks. You can find links to the process for Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, and Microsoft Edge below.
Google Chrome
Firefox
Microsoft Edge
Please note that when exporting bookmarks, File Explorer opens prompting a choice to save the html file. We encourage you to save the html file to your U: Drive.
