Missing grades (that should be visibly posted), grade calculations are off, or grade total discrepancies are reported

Overview

In regards to Blackboard, when students report discrepencies in their total versus how many points are actually available for a course or they report duplicate assignments in their grade book, it is likely that the course has hidden columns in the instructor view that are still calculated in the total and/or still visible to students.

If you find yourself asking this question: "I posted Forum/Discussion Grades for Week 1 of my current course by using Forum>Grade Forum. I can see my comments and grades there, however they do not show up in the Gradebook for the course." there are likely duplicate columns in the gradebook.

Instructions

To remedy this, we need to show the hidden column(s):

  1. Enter Full Grade center
  2. Click Manage > Column Organization
  3. Find and select the grayed out (hidden) Week 1 Discussion Board item
  4. Click Show/Hide > Show Selected columns
  5. Click Submit

Once you do that, just make sure that column is included in grade center calculations and shown to students.

To do this:

  1. Enter Full Grade Center
  2. Find the good column and click "Edit Column Information"
  3. Scroll down to Section 3 > Make sure all three option here are "Yes" ("Include this Column in Grade Center Calculations" and "Show this Column to Students")
  4. Click Submit

The bad Week 1 Discussion should then be hidden from students and removed from calculations to ensure your totals add up correctly.

To do this:

  1. Enter Full Grade Center
  2. Find the bad column and click "Edit Column Information"
  3. Scroll down to Section 3 > Make sure all three option here are "No" ("Include this Column in Grade Center Calculations" and "Show this Column to Students")
  4. Click Submit
  5. Then you can hide the bad column by clicking that column header and clicking "Hide Column"

If you notice your grade totals are off at the end of the semester check those hidden columns to make sure they're removed from the calculation.
